As I read this book my interest in the history of the Prussian-inspired American education and the use of it to support the books theme kept me turning pages to the end. Howerver, as the book progressed, the factual history it contains began to spring leaks, not from lack of accuracy in the history, but from within the hidden agenda of the book. While the indictment of the where, how and why of American public education gets reasonably good coverage, as I progressed toward the conclusion, the book's call for a return to basics started to raise red flags and the return to basics theme took on a more subtle but clear call for a return to religious (Christian) fundamental basics. As a non-believer, I realized that my initial agreement with much of the first half of the book gave way to a distrust of the integrity of the message which I feel implies a rejection of science in favor of Christian ideology.
